Uniform Overview
When one thinks about school uniform the first thing that comes to mind is discipline, unity and equality. The idea of uniform at school dates back to when teaching concept was introduced.
Whoever proposed the idea of wearing identical attires while attending school or taking classes’ needs to be saluted since it paved the way for equality and discipline at schools?
Uniform is a certification to the promotion of equality and discipline and conveys greater unity and synchronization. Uniform eliminates any chance of disparity and keeps the status parade, which people today are obsessed with, out of the scene since everybody looks the same and appears the same.
Uniform gives a strong message that when at school the sole purpose of everyone attending classes is to gain knowledge irrespective of the background the attendees have and putting all these social differences aside and uniting for a single purpose.
Importance: what makes it so unique and special?
Attending school is considered not to be a superficial activity but a rather engaging act that demands the attention of all the human senses. It has nothing to do with the background you have come from, the cast you belong to, and the ethnic identity you’ve been raised with.
It eliminates any social, background or cast differences and only prioritizes on the bases of intellect and the thirst to quench knowledge. In doing so the first thing that it needs to take into consideration is how people look when attending classes.
If people were to dress up as per their choice and the concept of uniform was not into practice the rich would stand out eventually by dressing up to the nines and the less fortunate would wallow in insecurities and complex because of their shabby clothing.
But when everyone is expected and instructed to dress similar any such chances of occurrence reduce to null.
Secondly, not everyone can afford to wear new clothes daily. So it covers for that brilliantly. Since a pair of school uniform could last a whole year which is economical and feasible both.
Thirdly dressing similar encourages healthy competition among students. They are safe from deviating from their purpose since dressing does not remain a concern.
When one dresses up similar and for a single and identical purpose arrives at a place the only thing that wins is a sense of equality.
Lastly, it gives an equal chance to everyone to shine out through their skills and intellect and not appearance. It also eliminates any chances of favouritism on the basis of status.
Disadvantages: are there any drawbacks?
Every good thing has a little negative aspect as well. And the only way to decide if it’s beneficial is by weighing the advantages and disadvantages and seeing which one overshadows the other. While wearing a similar and identical outfit has its advantageous aspect there are certain disadvantages as well.
Wearing the same thing all around the clock can be monotonous and sometimes discouraging. Students particularly children might lose interest in schools because of the same monotonous routines.
The material used for uniforms remains the same so in summers it might be too hot to wear the stuff and in winters it might get exceedingly cold wearing the same material of uniform.
Uniforms come in specified and limited sizes so it often does not suit on all physiques. Some are too lean for the uniform sizes while some bulky to nail it to perfection. This could become a reason for the inferiority complex among students who are lean or bulky.
Verdict
It can be easily established that uniforms are a great idea but the possibility of posing some disadvantages cannot entirely be ruled out. Schools should take in consideration the weather and season factor, body built and size factor while making uniforms and should include a colour day once a month to keep students, particularly children interested in schools and cut out the monotony.
