Dosage of Panadol for Elderly and Children

Adults (including the elderly) and children aged 12 years and over

Children 6 to 11 years:

Panadol Tablet Mechanism of action

Panadol works both as Analgesic (Relieving symptoms of pain) and Anti-pyretic (Reducing fever)

ANALGESIC:

Panadol (Acetaminophen)works by acting on Prostaglandin. It inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins in the central nervous system (CNS) of the human body and therefore block pain- sensory generation impulse. It effectively works by sensitizing pain receptors to mechanical or chemical stimulation.

ANTI-PYRETIC:

 Panadol (Acetaminophen) acts as anti-pyretic drug by acting on Hypothalamic heat-regulating centre to produce vasodilation. This increases the blood flow in the skin, capillaries dilate, and blood flow is enhanced through the skin, this results in sweating and ultimately heat loss from the body. This also inhibits prostaglandin synthesis, which in turn reduces the pain associated with fever.

Duration of action

Panadol starts to carry out its action in 3 to 4 hours of administration.

Route of Administration

• Panadol tablet is taken via Mouth- Oral administration only.
• Dosage: Panadol Tablets
• Do not chew, crush, macerate or break it.
• Take the tablet with a glass of water.

Precautions and warnings

1. Panadol Tablet contains PARACETAMOL. Do not use Panadol with any other paracetamol containing products. It is not recommended. The simultaneous use of paracetamol may lead to an overdose of this drug, and an over-dose of Panadol would result in various harmful side effects.
2. Hepatic Dysfunction is also seen in patients with excessive use of Panadol.
3. The use of Panadol may increase the risk of metabolic acidosis.
4. Paracetamol overdose would adversely affect the liver and might cause liver failure, which can lead to liver transplant or death.
5. Patients who have been diagnosed with liver or kidney impairment must consult their doctor, general physician or pharmacist and seek medical help immediately.
6. Keep this tablet out of reach of children for it may be harmful if swallowed unintentionally.
7. One must check the expiry date mentioned on the blister or the package of Panadol tablet.

Overdose

Concomitant use of Panadol with any other medication that also contains paracetamol constituent may lead to Panadol (Paracetamol) over-dose resulting in various side effects:

1. Panadol over-dose may cause liver failure.
2. Liver failure.
3. Acute Pancreatitis has been reported in patients with Panadol Overdose.
4. Hepatic Disorders have been observed.
5. It may also lead to liver toxicity.

How to treat Panadol Over-dose toxicity?

Administration of N-acetylcysteine or methionine has been reported to be effective.

Contraindications

Panadol should not be given to patients.

1. Those who are hypersensitive to paracetamol and its active ingredients and excipient 
2. Patients having bleeding problems, like hemophilia.
3. Patients having any Gastrointestinal disease or intolerance.
4. Those patients who are receiving anti-coagulants or uricosuric agents.
5. Those patients who are hypersensitive to aspirin.

Side Effects

Panadol tablet along with many benefits in reducing pain and fever, it may also cause some side effects that has been reported in a few patients.

Side effects include:

1. Thrombocytopenia- characterised by abnormally low levels of platelets in the blood. Results in unusual bleeding or bruising, black stools or blood in the urine.
2. Agranulocytosis- characterised by a low level of white blood cells.
3. Anaphylaxis hypersensitivity reaction- allergic reaction
4. Angiodema- swelling of the lower layer of the skin and tissue
5. Johnson Syndrome– a disorder of the skin and mucous membrane. Characterised by painful rash and blisters
6. Toxic epidermal necrosis- Skin disorder. Characterised by skin peeling and blisters form.
7. Bronchospasm- a contraction of airways in such a way that they become contracted. Frequent coughing and sneezing
8. Hepatic Dysfunction- Disorder in the liver
9. Anemia- lack of red blood cells to carry oxygen to tissues and organs. Characterised by tiredness or feeling weak. 
10. Dermatitis– a disorder of the skin. Characterised by dry skin, itching, rash or swollen red blisters.
11. Hepatitis – Inflammation of the liver
12. Renal Colitis– Renal stones are formed, and they block the urinary tract.
